Post-Graduation Paths

Your Career After Optometry

A wide range of rewarding career options open up after completing your Optometry degree from PCMT — in clinical practice, research, education, and the healthcare industry.

01

Clinical Optometrist

Work in hospitals, eye clinics, and polyclinics — conducting eye examinations, diagnosing refractive errors, and managing common ocular conditions under ophthalmologist guidance.

02

Contact Lens Specialist

Specialise in contact lens fitting, dispensing, and aftercare. High demand in private optical practices and retail chains where personalised vision correction is a premium service.

03

Optical Retail & Industry

Join leading optical chains or lens manufacturers as an in-store Optometrist, product specialist, or sales & training executive with strong technical knowledge of optics.

04

M.Optom & Higher Education

Pursue a Master of Optometry (M.Optom), MBA in Healthcare Management, Fellowship programmes, or research — opening the path to specialisation and academic careers.

05

Government & NGO Sector

Contribute to public health through government hospitals, vision rehabilitation centres, and NGO-run eye care programmes. Your degree is valid for relevant government recruitment bodies.

06

Vision Therapy & Low Vision

Specialise in binocular vision therapy for children, low vision rehabilitation for the visually impaired, or vision research — unique and growing niches within the eye care profession.

Internships & Careers

Internships & Placements

Clinical exposure and internships are built into the Optometry curriculum. Graduates have gone on to work with hospitals, optical chains, lens companies, and healthcare organisations across India.

Maximise your clinical hours — hands-on patient interaction during internship is the single biggest differentiator for job-ready Optometry graduates.

Develop expertise in contact lens fitting — this is a high-demand skill in private optical practice and retail chains, and significantly increases your earning potential.

Stay current with diagnostic equipment — familiarity with OCT, auto-refractors, and slit lamps is increasingly expected even from freshers in clinical settings.

Consider M.Optom after graduation — specialist qualifications in areas like paediatric optometry or low vision rehabilitation open doors to senior and academic roles.

Maintain strong academic records alongside clinical competence — both matter equally when applying to leading hospitals and reputed eye care chains.

Eligibility

Who Can Apply

The Optometry programme is designed for students from a Science background. A genuine interest in healthcare, patient care, and the science of vision is the most important quality we look for.

Physics & Chemistry

A strong grounding in Physics (especially Optics) and Chemistry from Class 12 provides an excellent scientific foundation for the Optometry programme.

Biology or Mathematics

Students with Biology or Mathematics as the fifth Science subject are both eligible. Biology is particularly beneficial given the programme's focus on ocular anatomy and physiology.

Healthcare Passion

Beyond academic eligibility, a genuine interest in eye care, patient interaction, and the healthcare profession is what sets successful Optometry students apart.
